#Chapter 29: A Prayer Answered
My eyes widen and I practically rip the bag open as I check the supplies in the streams of sunlight coming from the small, window. I gasp when I see her handy work: bandages, a needle and thread, antiseptic – everything I had begged for earlier.
"I couldn't just watch him die," she says, her voice wavering but firm. Tears start to form in my eyes, but I swallow done the need to cry.
"Thank you," I whisper, my voice choked with gratitude. I glanced at Alston, who was pale and breathing shallowly beside me. "This means everything, Lucy."
Quickly, I spread the supplies on the ground beside Alston. His eyes flutter open, and he tries to smile, moving closer to me, but his face contorts in pain. "Hang in there," I murmur, squeezing his hand. "We’re going to fix you up."
“Told you I’d be your first patient,” he coughs moving onto his back.
I smile, scooting on my knees closer to him, “Shh let Dr.Elise Clayton patch you right up.”
