Claire's POV
Beeping monitors pulled me from darkness. My eyelids felt heavy as I struggled to open them, wincing at the bright lights overhead. The antiseptic smell told me I was in a hospital before my eyes confirmed it.
"You're finally awake," a familiar voice said.
I turned my head and found Klein sitting beside my bed, his hair messy and dark circles under his eyes. His normally perfect suit was wrinkled, as if he'd been there all night.
"What happened?" My voice came out rough.
Klein leaned forward, relief on his face. "You were shot twice. Lost a lot of blood and nearly froze in the snow. The doctors removed the bullets, but you've been unconscious for almost a day."
Memories flooded back—the attackers, the gunfire, the pain.
I tried to sit up and immediately regretted it as pain shot through my shoulder and thigh.
"Easy," Klein said, gently placing a hand on my uninjured shoulder. "Your wolf healing has already started, but you shouldn't push it."
