Anna took her last chicken drumstick before heading to the playroom to join her brother.
“She might never eat that drumstick,” Olivia said in a playful tone, still trying to finish her own food. I hummed a response.
Mine was already getting cold in front of me. The kids might have gone silent about their father, but it felt like it was just the calm before the storm. I wasn't going to be able to lie to them forever. Even I was getting tired of it.
I was already thinking about what Olivia said about Dante. I didn't really know if he was a great dad. Getting my kids stuck with someone who wasn't going to love them as his wasn't something that I wanted.

I hated when my mind wandered off to him. He didn't even know that they were his when he started being nice towards them.
“Ugh,” I said out loud, running my hands through my face. Olivia reached out almost immediately, giving me a sympathetic glance.
“You'll be fine, love. Everything will make sense soon enough.”
