Chapter 22
Emmanuel didn't leave Velmont Cemetery until dawn broke and the sky turned a soft gray. He'd stood too long in the chilly moonlight—his body was cold, but strangely, his heart felt a bit steadier.
Now, back at his office, he stood in front of the massive floor-to-ceiling window, gripping a cup of coffee as he looked down at the city waking up. The sun began to break through the clouds, its golden light spilling onto the streets below. But standing there bathed in sunlight, Emmanuel didn't feel any warmth at all.
Jordan knocked on the door and walked in, only to pause for half a second. There was something about this scene—the usually commanding Emmanuel, looking so... distant. He instantly shook the thought off. No way. The boss? Lonely? That had to be his imagination acting up.
"Mr. Mitchell," Jordan said, his voice brisk, "we just got a call. The results from the investigation three years ago have been sent to your computer." With that, he stepped back out.
