Time was running out. The Elder was putting away his knife, drops of his blood fell into a pool that had formed under his hand and his throat bobbed when he mumbled incoherent words. I turned my head and watched Ophelia practically dragging Kiera by her hair at this point- okay not by her hair but she was peeling her daughter's hands away from her ears to make her listen.
Kiera’s eyes remained closed, she was still listening to Darian over her mother, that’s good.
For some reason, the Dark Guards stopped falling into the room and every last one of the highly trained mercenaries that the Elder had called for were lying limbless and dead on the floor.
They looked like broken chess pieces, falling on the game board.
Chess was another nifty thing they took from the humans. We took from the humans.
It was strategic, and calculated, not one move was made without a forethought of what the consequences could be and it also taught pattern recognition. Every Alpha had a board set up
