As the night went on, the three of them sat around a table by the barbecue grill in the hotel garden. The atmosphere was so tense it felt suffocating.
The aglio olio pasta had been finished by Joseph.
Chad's knuckles had turned white, yet he suppressed his anger and cracked open another bottle of beer.
"Here, drink up." He filled Joseph's glass, eyes sharp with provocation.
Joseph gracefully accepted it, a faint smile playing on his lips. "You hold your liquor well, Mr. Lawson."
Willow sat between them, watching as the two men went back and forth, trying to outdrink each other. Her brows furrowed deeper.
Just as she was about to get up and leave, Chad's words made her freeze in place. "I know she adds three sugar cubes to her coffee, but never finishes more than half a cup."
He tilted his head backward as he downed his glass, his gaze turning hazy. "She curls up like a frightened rabbit in the middle of the night when she has nightmares."
