Marlene looked at Vivian the way one might study a piece of work that required delicate refinement.
"Emily went there on her own, didn't she?" Her lips curved into a cold, deliberate smile. "Isn't that perfect?"
Vivian lifted her head, confused. "Aunt Marlene, what do you mean?"
The corner of Marlene's lips curved into a cold, calculated smile. "Creston City is a chaotic place. If something unfortunate were to happen there, it wouldn't be surprising at all."
She rose from the couch, walked to the desk, and picked up the phone.
A few seconds later, the line connected.
"It's me," she softly said. "My niece has a small problem, and I need your people to take care of it." Then, she handed the phone to Vivian. "Tell him exactly what result you want."
Vivian's palms were slick with cold sweat as she held the phone.
A rough male voice came through the receiver, "Speak, Ms. Lawrence."
Vivian's heart pounded.
