I adjusted the cuffs of my shirt, my movements precise, controlled—just like everything else in my life. The morning sun cast a golden hue over my office, yet I found little warmth in it.
Yesterday’s conversation with my mother lingered in my mind. Her words about regret, about wanting me to marry for love rather than business, had been unexpected. But they did not change anything.
I had long since accepted my role. Feelings were irrelevant. Emotions had no place in negotiations.
A knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts.
“Come in,” I said, my voice even.
The door swung open, and my assistant, James, stepped inside. “Sir, your father wants to see you in his office.”
I gave a slight nod. “Did he mention why?”
James shook his head. “No, but he seemed… impatient.”
Of course, he was. My father was a man who despised delays, who expected results before questions. I exhaled sharply, adjusting my blazer before striding toward his office.
