Hansel shouted, "Back off! He's my son—I can beat him if I want to!"
Matthew stepped back. "Fine. Go ahead then. But even if you're his father, you'll go to jail if you kill him."
He stood to the side, confident no father would actually beat their child to death.
Hansel raised the broom again, pointing it at Miles Wildwood. "I'll say it one more time—get out of this house, or I'll beat you to death!"
Miles pointed at his bleeding head and suddenly shouted back, "Do it! Hit me here! You're my father, you're so great, and I'm just your worthless son who deserves to die!"
Hansel's hands shook as he held the broom in the air, but he could not bring himself to strike again. Instead, he threw the broom down and fell to his knees.
"Please, I'm begging you—leave this farm life behind!"
Miles also dropped to his knees, pressing his forehead to the ground in stubborn silence. His wordless defiance spoke louder than any argument could.
Hansel screamed at his kneeling son, "Have you lost
