Kaia's gaze briefly swept over the blood dripping from his hand, but she didn't even flinch. Her indifference dragged Caleb back to five years ago.
It was her last academic competition in her senior year. He'd had a high fever of over 102°F but still insisted on attending just to see her.
When she found out he was sick, her eyes turned teary with worry. She helped him up and scolded, "Are you stupid? You're burning up. Why did you still come to the competition?"
Watching her fret over him had made him feel warm inside. It felt worth it. But instead of softening, she grew even more upset. "You're practically brain-dead from the fever, and you're still smiling?"
