When Alessandro returned to the villa, Lucia was sitting on the living room couch, reading.
She looked up slowly as she heard his footsteps.
He loosened his tie and tossed it onto the couch, still carrying that nauseating mix of scents she hated. He moved to the liquor cabinet, poured himself a glass of whiskey, and knocked it back, trying to burn down the fury building in his chest.
"You've lost control today," he said with his back to her, voice cold and sharp. "In front of the maids, in front of Elena… What was that? Some jealous, hysterical act?"
Lucia watched his back, and something about it struck her as absurd. "Jealous? You actually think I'm jealous?"
"Isn't that what it is?" Alessandro spun around, his eyes blazing with anger. "You went and built this whole drama in your head over a pair of cufflinks. Lucia, I always thought you were level-headed, but it seems even you can be so petty and suspicious."
