Michael Anderson looked at Stella Johnson’s tear-reddened eyes in the mirror, and a sharp ache twisted in his chest. Still, he spoke up.
“Don’t blame yourself. If he hadn’t thrown himself in, those guys wouldn’t have even gotten close to the end of the hallway.” He glanced down at the bandage wrapped around his wrist, a flash of Charles Hart’s blood-soaked back flashing through his mind. “When he left, he said he didn’t want you to see him like that—it’d just upset you.”
“He’s such an idiot.” Stella finally broke down, tears spilling freely as she dabbed at the wound on Michael’s back with a cotton swab. “He’s the one hurt the most, yet he chose to walk away.”
Michael caught a glimpse of her trembling lashes still holding stubborn tears in the mirror. Jealousy flared in his chest, but he forced out a smile. “You saw it—he’s made his exit. There’s no point holding on. You two… passed the point of fixing things a long time ago.”
