Chapter 7

Lorelei The door clicked shut, sealing him on the other side. But it did nothing to silence the storm he'd left inside me. My chest rose and fell far too quickly, each breath scalding, as if I'd swallowed the heat of his words whole. You'll be burning with me. The memory of his voice lingered, low and molten, curling around my spine like smoke. I pressed a palm against my sternum, as if I could flatten the frantic rhythm beneath, but it only pounded harder. Damn him. The echo of his presence clung to me—the sharp scent of pine and mint, the heat of his shadow over mine, the way his eyes had dipped to my mouth like he was seconds away from claiming it. I shut my eyes, but the darkness betrayed me. In it, I saw his storm-gray gaze, saw the hunger he had buried beneath all that control. For one dangerous heartbeat, I had wanted him to lose that control. "Fool," I whispered to myself, a bitter smile tugging at my lips. "You're no better than a moth circling a flame."
