Chapter 93
Amelia bit her lip and met his eyes. Resentment and hurt twisted together inside her. When the emotion surged, tears spilled down her face before she could stop them.
It was the first time Michael had ever seen her cry. A strange panic flickered in his chest. He lifted a hand to wipe her tears, but she turned her head and avoided him.
His hand brushed nothing. It hovered awkwardly in midair before he froze for a moment and slowly lowered it.
"Why are you getting so worked up?" he asked.
He glanced out the window, as if the view could cover the shift in his expression.
That only made Amelia angrier.
"How am I not supposed to be worked up?" she shot back, her voice trembling. "You promised me you'd send me and my mother abroad, and now you're going back on it."
She turned toward him as she accused him, the sob still caught in her throat. A tear clung to her cheek, refusing to fall.
Michael let out a quiet, helpless sigh. "I'm not going back on anything."
