Night eventually fell. The sky stretched out into a deep, dark blue with not a single star in sight.
Nadia returned home, and the entrance light hadn't been turned on yet.
The living room was pitch-black. She groped around in the dark and switched out her shoes by feel.
Originally, Wendy had insisted on coming back with her, but Nadia had refused. With that young woman around, she would probably end up stuck in bed for another day.
Nadia pulled out her phone. The screen lit up, displaying over a dozen missed calls—all from Samuel.
Her finger slid across the glass screen as she unlocked the phone and called him back.
The line connected almost instantly.
"Nad?" Samuel's voice carried a subtle anxiety.
"I'm sorry," Nadia replied softly, her voice a little raspy from her recent fever. "I had a fever earlier and slept it off. I'm okay now."
"As long as you're alright. Have you eaten? I'm nearby, so I can bring you something."
