“Why didn’t you tell me you were married?” Maria asked sharply.
Jacob buttoned his shirt and glanced at her in the mirror. “Would you have come to me if I had told you?”
Maria’s voice trembled with anger. “So I was just a bed warmer? A tool for your nights?”
Jacob gave a small smile. “Don’t take it all so hard, Maria. I enjoyed our time together.”
Maria gripped her dress tightly. “Then what was it? When you said you loved me—was that all a lie?”
Jacob stepped closer and gently stroked her cheek. “It wasn’t a lie. I love you and want to spend my life with you.”
“Then marry me, Jacob,” she challenged.
Jacob sighed irritably. “How can I marry you? I’m already married.”
Maria smirked. “So I can live with you but not be your wife? Does that make sense to you?”
Jacob looked away.
“I don’t expect much from you,” Maria said, voice softening. “But what about our child?”
Jacob’s eyes narrowed. “What did you say?”
“I’m pregnant, Jacob,” Maria said firmly.
