Calliope Godfrey ended the call.
Her legs gave out a little, and she stumbled into the bathroom, quickly locking the door behind her.
Everything she'd held back finally crashed down on her. She gripped the sink, sobbing so hard she shook all over, then doubled over, choking on dry heaves.
Conrad Hilliard heard the noise and rushed over, trying the doorknob with urgency.
“Calliope, what happened? Open the door!”
Inside, Calliope took a minute to steady herself. She splashed cold water on her face without looking at the mirror.
Still, when she lifted her head, the woman staring back had swollen eyes—yet something in them blazed with fury.
She opened the door. Her voice was hoarse, ice-cold.
“I want Jonathan Godfrey and Rosemary Miller to pay for everything.”
Conrad saw that glint of hatred in her gaze, and pulled her straight into his arms.
He didn’t speak at first—just held her close, his large warm hand gently stroking the back of her head.
After a long moment, he murmured next to her
