Madeleine stared at Alex, breathing unevenly, eyes full of resistance and stubbornness. "Beckett isn't like that."
"Madeleine!" Alex looked like he'd expected shock or maybe disappointment—but definitely not this. The last thing he thought she'd do was stand up for Beckett. "You've barely known the guy. What do you really know about him? You think he got to where he is by playing nice?"
"That's his personal life... it's none of my business," she said, her voice low, chest tight like something heavy sat on it.
No matter what Beckett had done, it shouldn't concern her. They were just business partners.
But why did it have to be Jenny? Why was it always someone from the Merritt family?
She was just tired of getting dragged into anything Merritt.
"Madeleine, cut ties with Beckett. He's not like me—I might've messed up, but I was real with my feelings. He'll use you, and when he's done? You'll be ruined," Alex muttered as he let go of her, his warning coming out low and firm.
