As soon as they turned into the alley, Beckett sensed something was off. Most cars were still stuck on the main road—hardly anyone used this back route, probably because no one was sure if it even led out.
But the moment his car entered, several others followed right behind.
"Stop here," Beckett said, voice low.
Sawyer glanced in the rearview mirror, instantly going on alert. "Mr. Beach, is something wrong?"
"Just hold it here for a bit." Beckett had him block the narrow alley intentionally.
The cars behind them also stopped, quietly. No honking. No pressure.
Beckett let out a sarcastic chuckle. Yeah—didn't want to make themselves obvious, huh?
"Uncle Sawyer, how many years have you been driving?" Beckett asked casually.
"Before driving for you, Mr. Beach, I was a racing coach," Sawyer replied, a bit shy. "Quit once I got older."
The corner of Beckett's mouth lifted. "Reckon you can shake them in a place like this?"
