Madeleine didn't hold a funeral for Ava Adams—not yet. Now wasn't the time. She had to uncover the truth first. Until then, Ava wouldn't rest in peace.
"Rachel couldn't have done all this alone. Someone's backing her," Madeleine muttered, her voice rough.
"Get some rest tonight. Let me handle it," Beckett said softly, eyes full of worry. She hadn't really slept in days.
The sky hung low, drizzling with rain. Beckett held the umbrella over her, wrapping her up in silence and warmth.
Madeleine's legs felt like giving out. She leaned on Beckett, eyes dim. "We promised... after the baby's born, Ava would be godmother."
