Maya's POV
I hesitated as I stared at the envelope. It was addressed to me, but a spell had been placed on it, likely the reason it had never been opened until now. The wax seal was still intact. I recognized it immediately. It had to be from my mother.
I wondered how long it had been sitting in my father’s safe, untouched. A part of me was grateful, grateful to have something of hers. But another part of me was nervous, even afraid, to open it.
The moment I broke the seal and unfolded the letter, I felt it, something inside me shifted. I knew instantly that my life was about to change, though I wasn’t sure how to feel about it.
I wanted to know what she had written, what she had left for me. But I also couldn’t stop thinking about how long my father had kept this from me. Why didn’t he give it to me when I turned eighteen? Why hide it at all?
