Chapter 644
Time ticked by, and I tried several times to say something to Elijah, only to be met with my own confusion and silence.
A nurse pushing a cart of medications passed by and suddenly said, "Massage his joints a bit to prevent stiffness, but don't touch anything else."
"Massage his joints? Okay," I replied, then clumsily reached to lift the sleeve of Elijah's hospital gown.
But when I saw his arm, I froze. His skin was covered in a web of crisscrossing scars from the glass shards. How could I even begin to massage these wounds? How could I bear to do it?
I covered my mouth, unable to stop myself from crying out loud. It wasn't hard to imagine that Elijah's other limbs must have been just as scarred and battered.
After crying for a while, I picked up a cotton swab from beside the bed and dipped it in water before gently dabbing it on his dry, cracked lips. That was all I could do for him.
Choking back tears, I whispered, "Elijah, I'm sorry. Please wake up, okay?"
