Chapter 24

Joyce nodded. She hardly ever left the house ever since her amputation. But she'd snuck out this time just to see Nigel. Since it was her first time going out on her own for a long trip after becoming disabled, she ran into a lot of challenges along the way. Her wheelchair couldn't climb stairs, and the bollards on the sidewalk kept her stuck on the wrong side of the street. When she tried to go uphill, her unfamiliarity with the wheelchair had her inching forward a little and sliding back again. But the moment she saw Nigel, all her exhaustion melted away. Though nervous, Joyce's eyes sparkled with hope. She looked at him and finally said the words of reconciliation she'd been holding inside for so long. "Ni, I didn't have a child with Jeffrey. Can you forgive me?" Suddenly, her wheelchair was jerked backward. Meryl brushed past her with a sour look and plopped down beside Nigel. "Dr. Marlow, are you asking for Ni's forgiveness as his ex, Jeffrey's wife, or as someone shamelessl
