Avery did not expect Gustave to actually stop him. In Baltimore, Gustave was famous for his indifference. Moreover, if he remembered correctly, Darlene's matter was related to Gustave's uncle, Douglas, so he would not interfere. Douglas had done many illegal things, and Gustave would turn a blind eye to it even if it happened right under his nose. However, Gustave actually helped Darlene.
