As Lucas stepped out of the vehicle and reached for Stella, her fierce expression made him hesitate. Stella faced him, her voice sharp. "Do you really want to watch me die right in front of you? Is that what you want?" Lucas, his voice heavy with emotion, managed to say only, "Stella..." His mind raced back to Emma's death in a blazing house fire and Ron's ensuing heartbreak. Paralyzed by fear of history repeating itself, Lucas could not find the words to stop Stella as she turned away. Then, his cell phone's piercing ring shattered the night's stillness. His mother's anxious voice came through, "Lucas, where are you?" "What's up, Mom?" Lucas asked. Jacey's worried voice echoed on the line, "Your dad had an accident at the house. You need to get back here fast!" "What's going on?" "He's just been rushed to the hospital; we don't know the details yet." "I'm heading back right now. Don't worry, Dad will be fine," Lucas assured her, ending the call. He immediately dialed Robbie.
