Edgar Shaw had thought about that too. Once his temper cooled down, he started wondering if Louise Bennett had actually been set up—but all the evidence pointed to her doing it willingly. There was no sign of coercion.
“I looked into it too,” he said. “But I couldn’t find anything to clear your name. So to this day, I still don’t know what really happened back then.”
Louise lowered her eyes, her hope dimming. She didn’t know what to say.
Edgar went on, “Your mom was heartbroken over all this. Her health got worse, and she held on just long enough to see you get out. Not long after, she passed. I don’t know what you went through in prison, but you kept blaming me, saying I was the one who got people to mess with you inside, and that I destroyed your life. When you got out, you hated me so much it felt like you wanted me dead.”
“We both assumed we’d been betrayed and kept pushing each other further away.”
