By the time they got back to the Davies estate, it was already getting dark.
The car came to a soft stop, but Ruby Henderson didn’t move.
She stared out at the deepening blue sky and said quietly, “Daniel Richards, you should go. Don’t come here again.”
It went silent in the car.
Daniel turned his head slightly. The light outside cut across his face, casting his features into sharp profile. He looked at her through the rearview mirror, voice low and raspy. “They need me here.”
He wasn’t wrong—David’s maternal family, the Zhao clan, was still eyeing the Davies’ assets.
And Ruby was due any day now.
With Daniel around, the vultures wouldn’t have the nerve to swoop in.
Then from the back seat, Ruby added, “It’s not right. Doesn’t feel appropriate.”
Daniel’s dark eyes stayed fixed on her face in the mirror—she looked so thin, so worn. No glow at all, even though she was about to have a baby. Losing Jason hit her hard, really hard.
