It was only eight when William Turner stepped into the villa, but the place felt dead silent. Just the occasional sound of footsteps from the maids echoed through the house, a silence so heavy it seemed unnatural.
He was never one for noise, but tonight... it felt too quiet.
His leather shoes tapped crisply against the polished tiles, a sound that carried a weird kind of emptiness. Even the lights, warm and soft, couldn’t hide the tiredness on his face.
He took off his coat and glanced upstairs out of habit, blurting out without thinking, “Is Mrs. Turner asleep?”
The maid froze for a second, hesitated before taking the coat, then replied quietly, “Madam’s moved out. She hasn’t been back. A couple days ago, Miss Heather came over with a few people and packed up all of Madam’s things. She was really polite, even gave us red envelopes before leaving to thank us for looking after her. Honestly, she wasn’t here that long… we didn’t want to take them, but Miss Heather insisted.”
