Mateo hummed in response and forced a smile. He had more to say but couldn't find the right words.
"Is this your idea, or Beth's?" Samuel asked.
Mateo seemed uneasy. "You should rest. This is on us… We'll work it out."
Samuel knew immediately that it was Bethany who wanted to keep her distance.
After Mateo headed to his room, Samuel called Bethany over. "Beth, it's been three years. You can't keep pushing Mateo away forever. He's just like any other guy, and this isn't fair to him."
Bethany stayed quiet, her head hanging low.
"Beth, I know better than anyone how much Mateo's done for both of us," Samuel said, taking her hand. "Listen, don't keep him waiting. He's a great guy, and you should treat him right."
"I know, Dad. Get some sleep. It's getting late." Bethany gently tucked him in. "I'll come with you to visit Mom's grave tomorrow."
"Sure." Samuel's chest ached at the thought of Tina.
