Alice admitted honestly, “I was thinking about checking in on him, but he said it’s not really convenient.”
“You wanted to see him?” Mr. Hawthorne’s grin widened, and his weathered eyes sparkled. “Worried about him, huh?”
Alice hesitated for a few seconds. “Ever since he gave me blood, he’s been kind of anemic. He saved my life—I just feel like I should visit and see how he’s doing.”
Though her reason for caring about Alexander Blake stemmed from gratitude, at least it showed she wasn’t indifferent—which, in Mr. Hawthorne’s eyes, was already progress. It also meant their relationship had moved forward a little.
That said, he remembered Edward’s warning—Alice couldn’t know who Alexander really was yet—so giving her his grandson’s home address was off-limits.
“He’s a tough guy—a little blood loss won’t do him in. No need to worry yourself or go out of your way. Once he’s feeling better, I’ll have him come see you.”
