"I've got an idea!" Ryan shouted jubilantly. He picked up the wooden shovel and dug a trench around the coop. Then he filled it in with unslaked lime.
Freya looked on skeptically. "And you're sure pythons would be scared of unslaked lime?"
"Unslaked lime doesn't smell like much, but it still has a scent to it," Ryan explained. "Snakes are extremely sensitive to chemical odors, so when they climb up to the edge of the unslaked lime, they won't dare to cross the threshold once they've smelled it."
But Freya was still worried about the python eating the three remaining pheasants. She mended the larger holes in the fence, hoping to stop the python from making its way in through them.
Ryan didn't want to keep on thinking about the pheasants, but when he thought about the python pilfering the birds that Freya had so painstakingly raised, his anger boiled over. There was no way in hell they were letting their poultry get eaten by a python just like that!
