Avery’s lips curved in a thin, polished smile.
“If I’d known she had some… connection to Alpha Dominic Volkov, I might’ve reconsidered taking her hand off. Larry, go on. Make it right.”
The guard who’d pinned Sloane earlier shuffled forward.
He muttered a flat, lazy “Sorry,” like the word was rotting on his tongue.
Sloane didn’t buy it. Not for a second.
But she held her expression still. She had no idea what Dominic and Avery share, acquaintance, rivalry, history, she couldn’t risk making things harder for him. Her wolf paced under her skin, low and irritated.
Anger burned hot and metallic at the back of her throat. She tasted blood from how hard her jaw was locked.
Then.
A choked cry tore out of Larry.
His knee snapped inward as someone kicked it out from behind, crashing him down. His weight slammed onto his injured wrist, dragging another shout from him. He tried to scramble upright.
He didn't make it far.
A hand landed on his shoulder, calm, deliberate, unmovable.
