James stood by the bed, hesitating. His hand hovered over Abigail's blanket as he debated pulling it up for her, but twice, he stopped himself.
To him, lifting a young lady's blanket while she slept felt like crossing a line—even if all he wanted to do was to help her lie down properly.
Raised by Oliver, James had inherited much of his mannerisms and principles. Juniper had also taught him the importance of being a gentleman. As a result, he was always careful to keep a respectful distance from Abigail.
Hence, he gently nudged her shoulder, whispering, "Wake up. Don't sleep sitting up. Lie down properly."
Abigail was sound asleep, too lost in her dreams to register his words.
James pushed her again, this time with more force, accidentally causing her to tilt sideways.
He instinctively dropped to one knee on the bed, reaching out to catch Abigail's neck just as she jolted awake.
