Richard's face paled. "How did you...?"
"We've been ten steps ahead of you this entire time, Richard," Mason explained. "We knew you wouldn't give up easily, so we prepared. Every piece of 'evidence' you think you have, we've already investigated and can explain."
The room fell silent as the impact of Mason's words sunk in. Richard stood alone in the center, his shoulders slumping as he realized the futility of his crusade.
A journalist raised her hand. "Mr. Steele – Richard Steele, that is – given this comprehensive debunking of your claims, do you have any response?"
All eyes turned to Richard. For a moment, he looked like he might launch into another tirade. But then, something seemed to break within him. The fire in his eyes dimmed, replaced by a look of profound weariness.
"I... I don't know what to say," Richard mumbled. "I was so sure... I thought I was right."
