Maddy perched on the edge of the worn armchair, her brow furrowed as she watched George putter around the kitchen. He was making his usual Sunday morning pancakes, a norm that used to involve Carol's laughter and playful banter. But today, the silence stretched thick between them, punctuated only by the sizzle of batter hitting the hot pan.
"George," Maddy said finally, her voice filled with concern. George flinched, nearly dropping the spatula. He turned to face her, a tired smile pasted on his face.
"Morning', Maddy. Didn't hear you come in."
"Just got here," Maddy replied, her gaze unwavering. "Can't help but notice things are...different with Carol lately."
George's smile faltered. He set the spatula down with a clatter and ran a hand through his already ruffled hair. "What do you mean?" George asked as his face furrowed in a frown.
"It's like you two are planets on different orbits," Maddy said, her voice gentle but firm. "There used to be this easy back-and-forth, you know?
