“I don’t understand. Maybe because I haven’t lived with my parents for the past eighteen years, some invisible changes have happened,” I muttered, pulling the blanket over my head. “That’s the only explanation I can think of. I can’t possibly not be my parents’ child, right? Blood relations can’t lie.”
Dorothy reached over and patted me gently through the sleeping bag. “Don’t worry too much about it. Once this is all over, we’ll look into it. The zamuda grandmasters have all sorts of specialties; surely someone will know what’s going on.”
Her reassurance was kind, but it didn’t ease the knot of uncertainty in my chest. I’d tried to connect with my parents through mind-linking numerous times, but nothing ever worked. It wasn’t just odd—it was alarming. Still, I nodded, not wanting to dampen her optimism further.
