The doctor instinctively jerked back and quickly shut the door again. Inside the room, Elsie’s panicked and embarrassed voice came rushing out, “What are you doing?!” She scrambled to pull her leg back, but William held her foot steadily and spoke gently, “Okay, okay, I won’t touch it. Just stay still.” The door opened from inside, and William stepped out. Tall and poised, he had that untouchable kind of elegance, like snow on a mountaintop. He addressed the doctor with polite reserve, “She’s got a hot water burn. Please prescribe the best meds you’ve got.” The doctor nodded immediately. William placed her foot on his knee and watched as the doctor took out a syringe, carefully pricking the blister and slowly drawing out the fluid. Thankfully, the burn had been protected well since it happened—no ruptured skin. The collapsing blister formed a natural barrier, lowering infection risk.
