Barely ten minutes after hanging up, Heidi received a PDF via email. She went to the study and connected to the printer. The few sheets of paper didn't feel heavy at all. She signed her name in the right column, expecting to burst into tears. She'd prepared napkins, but to her surprise, she didn't shed a tear. Her hand was steady, and her mind was calm. She reckoned that this was how things should be. At 3:00 pm, Maverick sent her a text. "What do you want to eat? I'll leave early to buy groceries." Heidi typed only two words back. "Whatever works." Maverick replied, "How about some duck for a stew?" "Whatever you want." After all, this was going to be their last meal together. Maverick returned home at 5:30 pm. He was carrying bags of groceries, along with a bouquet of roses. It was likely quite cold outside. His coat carried a chill, but his gaze held an unusual warmth. "Why didn't you turn on the lights?" After removing his shoes, he gave Heidi the bouquet. "I passed by
