She slammed the papers in her hand onto the table with a furious thud, shot me a glare sharp enough to cut steel, then turned on her heel and stormed upstairs.
Baffled, I picked up the papers—a list already filled with numerous names. Scanning it, I turned to Mary. "Mary, did Madam call for me last night?"
Mary shook her head, but Mary Isabella chimed in from the side, "Yes, Young Madam. Around 11 p.m., Madam knocked on your door, but you didn’t answer. She left quite upset. This morning, she’s been searching for you everywhere."
For the past two days, I’d been waking up at dawn to have breakfast with Ethan at the hospital—long before the rest of the household stirred. But someone knocked on my door last night?
How could I not have known?
"Did she knock for long?" I asked.
"A few times. She even called your name."
Mary smoothed things over. "Young Madam has been working late so often lately—perhaps you were simply too exhausted to notice."
