22 After The Attack
The older man turned to a body lying on the ground and examined it carefully all the while muttering to himself. Gavadiol held his peace. He had never seen his father so agitated.
The sheriff turned to him presently. “Sorrentino what say you? Will you and your son join a posse? If we start out now, we ought to be able to track them down.”
Sorrentino rose to his feet, his face drawn into a tight frown.
“I will advise you to do no such thing.” He said grimly.
“What do you mean?” The sheriff cried. His cries were echoed by angry men who were ready to ride out and avenge such a senseless bloodshed.
“First of all, if my guesses are correct, you won't find neither hide nor hair of them.” Sorrentino was speaking very calmly. “And even if you do, there's a good chance none of you will return alive.”
His words were met with angry protests.
“That's coward talk.”
“Maybe he's one of them.”
“I say we leave this rambler and get on with it.”
