They never had Betty clean Elena's room, always thinking she would be back soon. But a thin layer of dust began to settle on the luggage left behind as the days passed. Still, there was no sign of Elena.
The entire house grew more and more silent—so quiet it was almost frightening. Kane hadn't smiled in days, and Robin buried himself in work, wishing he could stay at the office 24 hours a day.
That day, the weather changed abruptly, and Kane came down with a high fever. His whole body burned like a furnace. His head was fuzzy and heavy, making him feel absolutely miserable.
