CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINETY SEVEN – HOMECOMING DAY
"Tonight," Lady Griffith's imperious tones rang through the hushed foyer, "we shall be hosts to some of the finest guests this side of the county. I expect each and every one of you to conduct yourselves with the utmost decorum and professionalism."
Her hawkish gaze seemed to linger fractionally on Charlotte's... unorthodox uniform, her eyes narrowing almost imperceptibly before she continued.
"Our homecoming celebration in Lord Griffith's newly restored gardens will be an event to remember. I shall not tolerate any missteps or lapses that could sully our family's distinguished reputation. Is that understood?"
A ragged murmur of "Yes, my lady" rippled through the assembled staff as they bobbed in a somewhat uneven chorus of curtsies and bows. With a curt nod, Lady Griffith turned on her heel and glided away, leaving a faint trail of pungent rose perfume in her wake.
