Callie knew she couldn’t enter the hotel. She sat in the car, tilting her head back to stare at the building.
For someone at Nelson’s level, if an investigation went wrong, jumping out of a window was not uncommon. Hence, his room was deliberately arranged on the low third floor—high enough to avoid immediate outside contact, yet low enough to deter drastic actions.
At the hotel’s back entrance, Callie stepped out of the car. She looked up, counting the windows. Just to be sure, she counted again. Only then did she pick up a small stone from the ground and throw it with all her might at the fourth window.
The sound was sharp and clear, but there was no response from inside. Slightly breathless, Callie bent down to gather a few more pebbles and threw them one after another. On the fifth attempt, the window finally opened.
Heart pounding, Callie held her breath, afraid it might be a guard.
