The car swerved sharply, brakes screeching to a halt.
Vivian leapt from the vehicle, tumbling onto the pavement and rolling to a stop, her body wracked with pain.
The ambulance's siren wailed incessantly, drowning out all sounds from the rear compartment—nothing could be heard in the driver's cabin.
Vivian had escaped successfully, but the fall left her sprawled on the ground, too pained to rise.
She lay there, watching the ambulance recede into the distance, its occupants making no move to pursue her.
Then, a woman from the car behind stepped out and shouted, "Hey! Are you blind? Do you have any idea how close you came to causing a crash?"
"I'm sorry."
Vivian struggled to her feet and bowed deeply to the woman. She wanted to call the police but feared the Whitehead family had already corrupted the authorities.
In the end, she could only ask, "Could you give me a lift?"
The woman wore a black business suit and black-rimmed glasses—every inch the corporate professional.
