The man on the sofa furrowed his thick brows, his deep gaze locked onto her.

Bernard rose, shifted to the center of the sofa, tapped the ash from his cigarette into the ashtray, and stopped bothering to restrain Vivian Donovan from drowning her sorrows.
Vivian picked up several bottles of red wine and walked to the table, resuming her solitary drinking.
Holding a wineglass, she downed glass after glass.
As she drank, she railed at Bernard, "You scoundrel! If it weren't for you, how could I have ended up like this? I hate you!"
She finished one, poured another, pointed at Bernard, and belched, "I'll drink every last drop of your wine—drink you dry until you're broke!"
"You heartless bastard! You're just like Lilith Whitehead—both of you are despicable capitalists who stop at nothing to get what you want."
