“I tried to stay away,” he went on. “I really tried. I told myself I wouldn’t come near you again. But I couldn’t. I can’t imagine you with someone else. I waited seven years, Lily. Seven years, not knowing if you’d ever come back.”
His hands slid down, still holding hers, and then slowly he sank to his knees in front of her.
“I didn’t know if you’d return,” he said, looking up at her. “And even if you hadn’t, I wouldn’t have gone to you. But you came back. You came back to me. Even if it was only because of our son.”
He tightened his grip on her hands, like letting go would destroy him.
“Please,” he whispered. “Save me.”
Lily’s heart ached so badly it felt like it might break all over again. Seeing him like this, on his knees, crying, shattered something inside her. Tears poured down her face as she stood there, unable to pull away, unable to move.
She didn’t know if she could forgive him.
But she knew one thing.
Letting go was just as painful as holding on, so she decided to hold him
