The air was heavy as I stepped out of the car, the faint smell of gasoline and mildew from the rundown motel wafting through the air. The building was as unremarkable as I had expected faded paint, cracked windows, and a neon sign that flickered weakly in the dim light of the evening. My secretary, Clara, followed closely behind me, her expression calm but her shoulders stiff. My guards flanked us silently, their presence a wall of protection I hardly noticed. My focus was razor-sharp, my mind replaying every moment of Eva’s humiliation and pain as I walked toward the door where Lila was staying.
“Room 12,” Clara said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
I nodded, my jaw tightening. Each step felt heavier, the anticipation coiling in my chest like a viper ready to strike.
