The morning sun filtered through the window lattice, casting scattered spots of light on the bedsheet.
When I opened my eyes, the caretaker had already brought breakfast to the bedside. The millet porridge was still steaming, with cut apple pieces beside it.
"Ms. Evangeline, how are you feeling today?" The caretaker's voice was soft, filled with cautious concern.
I propped myself up, leaning against the headboard, and took the porridge bowl. "Okay, didn't hurt much last night."
Halfway through drinking, a slight noise came from outside the gate, as if someone had placed something there and then quietly left. I put down the bowl, listening carefully.
The footsteps were light, but with a familiar rhythm. It was Peregrine.
The caretaker noticed my change and said softly, "Ms. Evangeline, Mr. Peregrine comes every day to leave things. Sometimes it's fresh fruit, sometimes imported medicine you can't get in town. He never lets me tell you."
