Right now, Lena Carter’s calls for help had completely gone silent. Jason must’ve believed she was beyond saving, that’s why he felt safe enough to leave her behind.
I took a flashlight from one of the boatmen and shone it across the lake. The only thing I could see were ripples spreading out. No sign of Lena anywhere.
“Splash! Splash!”
Two quick splashes—those were the two skilled boatmen diving in.
From the other boat nearby, a man in a crisp suit called out to Henry, “Mr. Smith, everything’s taken care of.”
I didn’t have the capacity to care what that meant—my eyes were fixed on the freezing lake. Minute by minute, time bled away. The men surfaced for air occasionally, diving in again to continue the search. My anxiety knotted tighter by the second.
“What do we do now? What if she’s already drifted too far?” I asked, panicked.
I’d thought that if Lena was pushed in, she’d still be able to grab a rope and we could pull her up. But clearly, I underestimated Jason’s thoroughness. No wa
