I followed the address Vera gave me and found where Jason Smith was living now. Xander insisted on coming along—he didn’t feel safe leaving me to handle it alone.
When Jason opened the door and saw us, there wasn’t even a flicker of surprise on his face. It was like he’d been expecting us.
He didn’t look great—actually, worse than the last time I saw him at the hospital. He looked exhausted, with unshaven stubble and a hollowed-out face.
“Did you know Evan’s been found?” I asked. That was the first thing out of my mouth.
He nodded.
“Then why haven’t you gone to see him?” I pressed.
He let out a sharp, humorless laugh. “For what? To take him back with me? You think any of you would actually let him live with me again?”
I sighed. “No matter what, you were his father for five years. He really meant it when he called you ‘dad.’ He misses you. At the very least, you owe him a proper goodbye. Face to face.”
